A painterly portrait of a very handsome Bichon frise dog gazing adoringly at her owner ...
The Bichon frise is a popular small dog breed, similar to the Maltese terrier in appearance but slightly larger, standing 9-12 inches at the shoulder. These feisty little dogs have a cheery disposition and are very playful, with their plumed tails carried high over their backs. They enjoy human company and are intelligent, trainable, and lively without being "yappy" like many small dogs. However, it is important to socialize them properly and make it clear that they are not the "pack leader" in your household!
The name is French, and means curly-coated lapdog. Derived originally from poodles and water spaniels, Bichon frise have a soft double coat, and are ideal for those with allergies, as they do not tend to shed; this does mean that they require periodic clipping to remain clean and comfortable. Most commonly white, the Bichon Frise may also be cream, grey or apricot in color. Similar to many white breeds, flea-bite allergy and other skin complaints can be a problem with this breed and care should be taken to use flea prevention regularly. Watery eyes, cataracts, epilepsy and "loose" kneecaps (subluxating patella) are also known issues, but are common among other small breeds too.
With a daily walk, regular grooming and a monthly bath, this little chap makes a wonderful companion! The average lifespan of the breed is about 15 years.
This photograph has been post-processed using Topaz Detail and blended with two texture layers from Joel Olives to give it a painterly feel.
