Childhood is the world of miracle and magic; it is as if creation rose luminously out of the night, all new and fresh and astonishing. The end of childhood is when things cease to astonish us. Eugene Ionesco
The son of a Romanian lawyer and a French mother, Eugene Ionesco was born in 1909 in a small town some 150km from Bucharest. His family moved to Paris when Eugene was a baby, but his father returned to Romania without the family during the First World War. Claiming that his wife had left the country, Eugene's father was granted a divorce, remarried, and claimed custody of Eugene and his sister. The children were returned to their father in 1922, but their relationship with their stepmother was not good. Their mother also moved back to Bucharest and the children moved in with her when they could no longer bear to stay in their father's household. Although urged by his father to become an engineer, Eugene was drawn instead to literature and poetry. He assumed a role as a French teacher and went on to become a prolific playwright of international acclaim. Eugene Ionesco died in Paris in 1994 and is buried in the Cemetery of Montparnasse.
With his troubled and disrupted childhood, one must ask how autobiographical the words of this poem are; certainly it is a sentiment that I believe many can relate to...
This artwork is based on a photograph of a wonderful, happy young boy. I have used digital painting techniques to blend his innocent features with colors and textures from Melissa Gallo, to give a painterly feel to the final artwork.

This is so touching and inspiring and such a wonderful quote to remember so that we work hard to keep children's innocence free from the tragedies of this world. Let's let them be children as long as possible. Simply beautiful Julia. F/L T G P
