This image shows the sun rising over the Potomac River valley, separating Maryland and West Virginia, on the morning of August 3, 2012, and was taken from Rumsey Park in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The text is a Native American proverb from the Cherokee tribe. The Cherokee were an agricultural people. They migrated to the Great Lakes area from modern-day Texas or northern Mexico in prehistoric times but were displaced to the mountains and valleys of the southern Appalachian chain by the Iroquois and Delaware tribes, settling in modern-day West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama.
