Shepherdstown - East German Street in November
[Featured in the following Fine Art America groups: Stop Time with Art; 3-A-Day Waiting Room Art; Photography and Textures Make Fine Art; Beautiful Scenery; Digital Painting; West Virginia Photographs]
This photograph was taken on November 11, 2012, during the festivities to celebrate the semiquincentennial of Shepherdstown, the oldest town in West Virginia. The skyline along this street has changed little since the days of the Civil War, when Shepherdstown was transformed into a field hospital following the Battle of Antietam, a few miles to the north across the Potomac River. German Street is the main street in this historic town - the High Street, to use European parlance. Shepherdstown was originally named Mecklenberg, and was heavily settled by those of German descent. The Town Run provided a faithful power source for water driven mills, making it a perfect site for a town to flourish.

I love European architecture and this is one of them that livens up the street! I would love to visit and see as much as I can - that's in my bucket list! You seem v well travelled and I have enjoyed viewing your lovely shots! Thanks for sharing! f/v
Julia Springer replied:
Thank you Belinda; the original settlers in Shepherdstown were from Germany, and the town was known as Mecklenberg. I have always been a bit of a nomad, and I hope to see a lot more in years to come!

Love it. v/f Where is this? New York state?
Julia Springer replied:
Thanks Patricia. Shepherdstown is the oldest town in the state of West Virginia; situated just across the Potomac River from Maryland, and the nearby Antietam battlefield, it provided a sanctuary to the thousands of wounded soldiers retreating from the same. In 2012 the town celebrated the 250th anniversary of its incorporation. Well worth a visit!
