Soul in the Sky - US Air Force Memorial
An inspirational quote from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" graces this stunning view of the US Air Force Memorial in Arlington. The three stainless steel plated spires forming the monument mirror the contrails produced by the jets of the Air Force Thunderbirds display team when they perform the "Bomb-burst maneuver" during their displays. The presence of only three contrails indicates that this is the "Missing-man maneuver" performed during Air Force funeral fly-overs.
In this image the spires lead us inexorably to a clearing in the overlying cloud-cover...
The original photograph was post-processed with the aid of Topaz Black and White Effects filters. A texture layer from Kim Klassen subtly adds graffitied phrases - 'Soar' - 'Break free and fly' - 'Trust' - in the background, and a vignette from Joel Olives has also been used to achieve the end result.
With the addition of the quote from Act V, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's play, this work is a truly inspirational picture, whether as a testimonial to honor the memory of a lost airman, or to inspire any current or aspiring pilot... in fact, who can fail to be inspired by these soaring columns reaching high above to the vast skies?
