The Green Man Cometh
Celebrated in mythology and legend across the world, the coming of spring, with its promise of warming days and fertility, has frequently been personified by the Green Man. Plant and animal come together and are embodied in this persona. Notice the antlers and leaves forming the headdress of the Green Man here in Shepherdstown, WV. With his wreath of ivy leaves, and his benevolent smile contradicting the rather scary mask, we welcome him to town in the company of Morris dancers. He comes to frighten away the last of the winter's chilly breezes and piles of snow.
