The afternoon sunshine plays on the rooftops of the houses in the historic district of Shepherdstown, in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The fluttering flag leads the eye to the blue ridges in the distance, and the leaves of the trees appear to glow in the warmth of the sun's rays. Deepening shadows and circling birds add to a sense of restful tranquility in this picturesque small town.
