This photograph of the figurehead on the prow of the HMS Bounty was taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico in February 2011. The replica tall ship, which featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, starring Johnny Depp, was lost at sea off Cape Hatteras during Hurricane Sandy. Despite the best efforts of the USCG, the lives of the captain and one crew member were tragically lost as a result of the sinking.
Carved figureheads were common on the prow of ships built between the 16th and 19th centuries. In Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, spirits or water fairies, also known as Kaboutermannekes, lived in the figureheads and helped protect the ship from the elements; should the ship be lost at sea, the Kaboutermannekes would lead the souls of the sailors to eternal rest in the Land of the Dead.
The original photograph was post-processed using Topaz photoFXlab, and Adjust, Clean, B&W Effects and Simplify filters to create a cameo effect.
