Hidden amongst the trees at San Gervasio, on the island of Cozumel just off the coast of Mexico, stand the remains of a Mayan temple. Not just any Mayan temple, but the temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility and healing, and the sacred Mayan center of love and fertility; this was an essential pilgrimage for every young Mayan woman!
Invoking the power of those days, a tremendous electrical storm throws forks of lightning from a distant nebula, illuminating the ruins of the temple and producing visions of Mayan statues, calendars and glyphs among the stars. Starkly highlighted in the foreground stands a proud blue iguana, a direct descendant of the iguanas that roamed this land during the heyday of the lost civilization...
This conceptual image is derived from multiple original photographs, which have been given a more painterly feel using digital brushes. This work, Light of the Maya, provides a visual and temporal counterpoint to Light of the New World.
